Mother of the Groom! Makeup, Hair – What to Wear?

Elizabeth and James in Wedding Outfits Posing

Is it my imagination, or are there LOT’S more weddings going on?
I’m so glad that wedding’s are back – I missed them!
Now that most of us are vaccinated for Covid-19, we feel a lot safer planning a special get-together.

I’m so happy that my son James and his lovely bride Elizabeth were able to tie the knot this past June. It was a beautiful barn wedding that took place in the New Jersey Countryside.

The weather was very warm, so they kept the outdoor ceremony short and (very) sweet. Fans were given to guests to keep cool, and afterward, we enjoyed cold white wine in the shady barn.

This was a small wedding by USA standards, there were 60 guests.
I’m really impressed that James and Elizabeth looked into how to do a smaller, home-spun wedding and were able to save a lot of money to put towards buying their first home.

What does a mother of the bride or groom wear for an outdoor barn wedding?

I wanted to feel special, but certain elements of the typical mother-of-the-bride dress were out.
The dress had to be lightweight and breathable – no heavy fabrics, no beads, nothing fussy.
I was looking for a comfortable, easy-to-wear mother-of-the-bride dress, yet a certain amount of elegance was in order.

I had ordered a few dresses from various online sources; take a look at these contenders for the perfect mother-of-the-groom dress!

I found Nordstrom’s personal shopping service very helpful. Nanci from The Shorthills Mall store was fantastic! She pulled a couple of great dresses for me, one of which was this dress by Tahari ASL. I loved it, but maybe it was a little tropical for a barn wedding.

Norstrom’s personal shopper Nanci also found this Eliza J maxi dress for me which was lovely, but more appropriate for the low-key, outside, rehearsal dinner, which is what I ended up wearing it for.
The fabric had a nice stretch to it, which made it a very comfortable dress to wear for an elegant occassion.

I really liked this cocktail-length dress by Marchesa You can’t see this in the photos, but it did fit a little boxy in the torso, and kind of puffed out between my shoulder blades, that’s probably because I’m short-waisted.

Another dress from Marchesa, I thought this fit and flair design was absolutely charming, what look like polka dots are actually small white hearts!

This dress from Dress The Population was RED CARPET FABULOUS! But not for a barn wedding – plus it looked way too bridal for me.

Let me show you the winner! This is a brand that I have loved for many years, and everytime I get a dress from Diane Von Fustenburg I end up loving it for forever.
